Most people have at least heard of the popular Myspace and Facebook game Farmville. That game was created and produced by a company called Zynga. Nobody is completely sure if Google purported $100 million investment into Zynga but it certainly wouldn’t surprise me. It has seamed real enough to raise a few eyebrows considering $100 million is not a small chunk of change, not even for Google.

This looks to me like Google may have some ideas of jumping into the facebook advertising game. Not a bad idea really, and knowing Google they won’t just dabble their feet in it – they will go all the way. The one thing I’m a little curious about is why Google didn’t just buy Zynga outright?

Starting a small business online is really not that hard. Whether you’re a webmaster who only develops websites with the intention to sell them for profit or you just run one particular type of online business, you really should consider registering your business with the state. Why is this so important you may be asking yourself? Well, here are just a couple different reasons it pays to register your business:

Getting loans for projects – You may want to try and expand your business. Expanding costs money and with a registered business you can look into getting a small business loan.

Protection of personal assets – Remember, when you run a business you are responsible for that business. Should something happen and someone takes you to court for whatever reason you can lose your assets. This means your car, house, paychecks..etc. By registering a business you are protecting your personal assets incase something should happen.

Believe me, before I incorporated for the first time I thought it was going to be the hardest thing I ever did. Thankfully, there are sites out there like MyCorporation and LegalZoom which basically do all the paperwork for you and make it quite simple to incorporate your small online business.

My previous pagerank post was pretty much right on about the first Google pagerank update for the year of 2010. I told all of my readers that the update would happen in late March or early April. Well, surely enough, I think it was April 1st to be exact when the pagerank update happened. So now that the first PR update for 2010 came and went when is the second one gonna happen? Well, judging by the calculations that I use (which I taught all of you in my previous post) I am expecting Google will do another pagerank update towards the end of this month and if not, then it will be early July when we will see it.

The pagerank update has me excited because I have been doing a ton of backlink building over the past month or so on about 5 different websites. Since I saw a number of PR0’s go up to PR1/PR2 in the previous update I am hoping to see some PR4’s this time around. Remember, right now is the time to get as many extra backlinks put up if you are hoping to get them indexed before this up and coming update!

So I was browsing over some of the names that are set to appear in auction at T.R.A.F.F.I.C Vancouver this year and all I can say is, WOW! Someone is going to be selling UsedCar.net and UsedCars.net as a paid, Media Options is going to be selling Pizza.net, and a private seller has agreed to add CreditCard.net to the auction list.

Not exactly sure yet what dot com names will be showing up but a few premium .CA (Canada) domains will be listed as well. Some of these include:
Commercials.ca
Designs.ca
Drinks.ca
Spanish.ca
Streaming.ca
Townhomes.ca
Vehicles.ca
BowlingBalls.ca
Wakeboards.ca
..and many more.

If you’re interested in getting into the auction then I would plan on arriving in Vancouver around June 6th-7th. For more details check out the T.R.A.F.F.I.C website.

My Norton subscription recently ended and I happily removed it off my computer after discovering the new free security suite that was put out by Microsoft. If you haven’t already checked out the new Microsoft Security Essentials then you’re missing out. No more having to pay for good virus scanners such as McAfee and Norton! No more having to deal with slow resource hogging virus scanners like AVG either!

I’m actually surprised to see Microsoft giving this out for free. Considering they charge for everything else they produce I begin to wonder what made them decide to give this package out for free. We all know that big security companies such as Norton charge close to $20 per month for such a product. An even bigger question that comes to mind is – what’s going to happen to these larger security companies now?

If you’ve never been to NameBio.com then you’re not truly in the domain business. The nice thing about this website is that it automatically pulls previous domain sales from popular domain auction websites such as Sedo and Afternic. The database of domain sales this website has is the largest of any on the web. Therefor, if you want to see what a previous domain has sold for this would be the number one place to look. If you’re in the business of buying and selling domain names this tool can be a great way to come up with a fair price to charge for a domain name you are trying to sell.

For example, say you own the domain FloorInspectors.com, and you have found one or two people who are interested in buying this domain from you. Of course both of these interested buyers wanna know how much you are looking to get for such a domain. Well, now to get an idea you can visit the NameBio website and set the TLD to .com, put one of the domain keywords in the domain box (for example I put in the word “floor”), and watch it automatically update the list. Now you can see the prices vary because there are so many floor domain names listed. From there you would sift through them and pick the ones that most closely resemble yours whether they are similar length or words or whatever. What makes this tool even nicer is that you can reference back to it when giving your potential buyers a price. You can now tell them “These are what similar domains have sold.” which is why you are asking XXXX amount for a particular domain.

So there you have it! A neat new tool you can go and play around with to see what different types of domains have sold for in the past. NameBio is a great website and I give it 5 out of 5 stars!

People are always posting in forums and asking me when I think the next PageRank update will be. I am going to post this here in hopes some of you will read it and use what you read to be able to predict this stuff whenever you want. Basically, Google updates its pagerank roughly 4 times per year, on a 3 month basis. The previous Google PR update was right before New Years day. Therefor, my personal prediction on the next PR update will be around late March or at the latest, early April. If you haven’t been building links lately then now is the time to get busy. It’s already the middle of February and you will need to allow Google time to discover your new backlinks. Incase you want some ideas on places to submit your links for free check out these ideas:

Comment on DoFollow blogs – You can search for dofollow blog directories. Read their blog and leave a useful comment. It may get approved giving you a free dofollow backlink!

DoFollow Web Directories – Another simple way to get free backlinks. Search Google for “dofollow web directories” and start submitting!

Relevant Link Exchanges – It’s been said time and time again but these are about the best kinds of PR links you can get. Find relevant sites to your niche and email them asking for a simple link exchange. You give them a link from a resource or sub page of your website, and they do the same in return!

Get your backlink building done now and look for the next Pagerank update around late March or early April of 2010!

I took a Visual Basic class back in college and it’s been forever since I’ve played in this event driven environment. However, my father and I finally decided to get our first official VB .NET application underway. This program has been an excellent project for both of us and is coming along rather well. ATGrabber is going to be an addon tool that works hand in hand with SpectraVue. SpectraVue is a peice of beacon radio software that works with SDR-IQ’s (Software Defined Radios) to capture signals sent out from beacons all over the planet. We hope to support a number of other radio software packages in the second version but version 1 itself has taken a bit longer to finish than we anticipated. We are hoping to have it launched and available for purchase by the beginning of March.

If all goes well and ATGrabber is a hit be sure to keep an eye out for a number of other applications we will be working on putting together.

If you have a Facebook account then I’m pretty sure you have heard or seen the word “App” before. So what exactly is a Facebook app? Well… have you ever logged into your Facebook account and had someone send you an invitation to join them in Mafia Wars? How about someone requesting to add your birthday to their calendar? Or, send you a gift such as a drink or a cup of coffee? All of these things are done using an App, short for Application. Facebook has their own language called FBML which goes in nicely with PHP and some of these applications do not take much coding. Many businesses have also started making fun facebook applications to help promote their business. The nice thing about Facebook applications is that a unique and interactive game can have visitors coming back on a daily basis.

I did not write this app from scratch. I did find a chunk of the code online and made appropriate changes for a more unique style and feal. Take a second and visit Mafia Beat Down. It’s a fun RPG (role-player game) that allows you to build a mafia character and earn cash, build a posse, buy weapons, fight other users, and tons of other cool stuff. Take a second and check it out, your character is created by simply adding the application.
